About us

The Story and People behind Artisans Republik

Artisans Republik is a studio space nestled in the heart of Southbroom which offers individuals an escape from the hustle of everyday life and a space to develop their creative skills. There are a variety of workshops available with new craft being added as the team sources Artisans from all over South Africa to facilitate courses. Workshops include chalk painting, glass bead making, ceramics, pewter and so much more.

In addition to our regular craft workshops the venue is available as an open studio for those wanting to take a break and hone their artisanal skills in their own time. Facilities include access to metal tools, painting and craft accessories, workspace and most importantly, good coffee!  The open studio is a simple and cost effective means to developing craft projects without the hassle of having to find the space (and sanctity) at home.

Beth Cook

Beth Cook

Founder | Workshop Facilitator

Craft has always been a part of my family, each of us having found niche areas of interest and spent time on perfecting our respective skills. When faced with new projects there’s always someone who can be there to assist with more often than not the project becoming a weekend event with family, friends, food and wine. Creating things with my hands has not only been the perfect way for me to develop my creative skills, but it has in turn offered me enormous independence when tackling DIY projects. It’s an incredibility empowering feeling when you look at a space or piece and know that your skill and effort made it happen.

As a businesswoman, I really do know and value the importance of time out. Yet too often this can be distracted by a phone call, social media or everyday happenings. Dedicating time aside in my week has always been a real challenge, but I know that when I do, whether it be firing up my kiln or refurbishing an old piece of furniture, it is awesome.

Creating the Artisans Republik space has allowed me the opportunity to share with others my love for things made by hand and instilling that sense of empowerment that drives me each day.

Claire Brear

Claire Brear

Creative | Workshop Facilitator

Claire was born and raised on the lower South Coast, KZN. Her ‘fiddling with fabric’ as she likes to call it, started from when she was very young. Encouraged by her family, her grandmother who used to organise craft sessions for all the cousins during the holidays and her mom who was always sewing up a storm at home, meant there was always available fabric for Claire to bring her ideas to life.

Over the past couple of years, Claire has been working with a couple of diverse types of textile crafts, including the ancient Japanese dye-technique – shibori, linocut/block printing as well as dabbling with some eco-dyeing.  When crafting a new piece, her inspiration comes from a range of places – nature, something she spotted on Pinterest, browsing the craft and design sections in book stores, and a whole lot of Instagram.

Fun facts about Claire: “I will never say no to a good curry, and I have a small obsession with vintage Volkswagens!”

Pat Monk

Pat Monk

Scrapbooker | Workshop Fcailitator

Photography, keeping scrapbooks and photo albums have always been part of my life – my father was a photographer so from a very early age I was either his “subject” or had a camera in my hand.

I started teaching heritage scrapbooking in 2004 and loved it so much that in 2006 I opened a scrapbooking and coffee shop. Before then I had worked at a craft magazine called ‘Treasured Moments’ as their Creative Editor as well as a London based company Craft-Ed as their ‘Creative Designer’.

I absolutely love crafts of any kind and have done pewter for more than 10 years, stained glass, glass fusion and mosaic to name the ones that consume me the most. I started teaching pewter classes 6 years ago and love the fact that you can see something stunning in a short time or create a little special gift.

Pat’s Claim to Fame: At the end of 2008 I was sent to London for two weeks to work on some paper designs and I was asked to do a scrapbook album for the Queen as she was the figurehead of education and we supplied education based products to the schools
